Uses for Gravel

When it comes to various projects one of the most important things that people will often forget to mention is the use of gravel. This material can come in handy for many different projects around the house and can be vital to larger projects too. You many not even realize how many different ways you can use the material, but here are just a few ideas.

The first thing that you might want to consider using gravel for is a walkway. Many people today prefer to go with a paver stone walkway or even a cement or stamped concrete walkway, but gravel is another option. This material can make for a great walkway if it is installed properly.

To install the walkway properly you first need to stake out where you want your path to go. Once you know that then you will need to dig out the pathway. You don’t need to dig deep, but you should dig down at least a few inches. This will provide a bed for the gravel that will become your new path. Once you have dug out the path area you will want to line the pathway with bendy board. The board will create the framework on either side of the path so that you will not have the gravel spilling out everywhere. You want to keep it contained in order for your walkway to clean and neat.

Another thing about pathways is that while not everyone will want to use gravel for their pathway, they may still need to use the material if they want to put a path in. The increased popularity of paver pathways and patios has not decreased the demand for good gravel. This is because part of the process for installing a nice paver patio or walkway is to use gravel as part of the foundation.

When you are installing a paver patio or walkway you will need to put layers of sand and gravel down before you ever lay one paver down. As you lay down each layer and tamp in into place you will are create a firm foundation for the patio or walkway. You are also creating a way for water to drain through the patio or walkway without collection unnecessarily.

It is important to think about gravel as an asset when you are looking to create filters or drains in your yard. This material can allows water to flow freely through it, but it also keeps bigger things from going into any drain and potentially causing a back up of some kind. If you think about it carefully you can find all sorts of uses for gravel and because it is a fairly inexpensive material and readily available there is no reason not to use for many different projects.

Who’s Doing the Paving?

There are lots of things that you may want paved, but often the decision on whether or not paving takes place is left to the municipality that operates in the area. Getting things paved can be a process that requires quite a bit of lobbying in some cases. Other times you can take care of the work yourself and don’t need to involve anyone else. The trick is to know when you can do the work and when you need to have the city or county come and do the work for you.

One way to try and determine if you can do the work yourself is looking at where the paving will take place. If you want to pave something that is on your own property then you can usually go right ahead and do that. You will probably still need to get some sort of permit to make sure that you are within all the rules and regulations that your local government requires.

If you are looking to do the work on public land then it is a safe bet that you cannot do the work yourself. Most of the time when paving work is needed on public land it is public dollars that must pay for it. This means that all the work must be done using publicly awarded contracts. Sometimes there will be municipalities or other government entities that will take care of the work themselves.

When a government entity can take care of the work themselves it is quite different than going through the process of hiring a company to do the work for them. The thing is that most government entities are not in the paving business. This means they won’t have the necessary tools, equipment and manpower to take care of the job without contracting out to other companies. If a government entity can do the work themselves it is really a rarity.

If you want to get something paved that is on public land you are going to have to lobby your local government to make it happen. Often they will have a list of paving projects that they know needs to get done. You may have a bit of an uphill fight to get your particular job moved ahead of all the others. Usually there are limited dollars available to do these sorts of projects and beyond that they sometimes impose fees to homeowners directly impacted by the improvement. For instance in a neighborhood that doesn’t have sidewalks, homeowners could have to pay for a share of the sidewalks that are put in on their street.

Knowing that you should be careful what you ask for when it comes to paving on public land. It is best to just handle your own paving needs on your own property and leave the rest alone.

Organic Mulching for Weeds

When spring comes around one of the most annoying things to deal with in the yard is the growth of weeds. Weeds can be obnoxious to the point home owners may resort to environmentally dangerous chemicals in order to kill them.

One of the ways to prevent weeds from growing out of control is mulching, a process which has other benefits for your yard and garden. When you mulch you put down a layer of organic material over soil blocking the path of weed root systems that would normally have great ease moving wherever they want. At the same time mulch helps soil retain moisture and in doing so keeps good plant roots strong, healthy, and cool in the heat.

Sometimes a few weeds will get through so there could very well be some maintenance but it shouldn’t be anywhere as much as you’ve experienced in the past.

Now in order to mulch it’s good to know a few things about the different kinds of organic mulch out there. Some break down easier than other thus feeding nutrients into the soil. However, those kinds of mulches need to be replaced more often.

An example of longer lasting mulch is pine bark wood chips or nuggets. An example of a less durable mulch, i.e. that it will need replacing more often, is grass clippings or leaves.

Weather can be a factor in the choice of mulch because you’ll want to make sure whatever you put down won’t wash away in a downpour or that it will stay in place during high winds.

• Where to get mulch: Mulch can either be store bought or found using the resources around you. Grass clippings, leaves, pine needles, and the like are generally available in residential areas. General hardware stores usually sell the heavier kinds but check if it was treated with chemicals, which could affect other plants in your yard.

• When to mulch: When you do decide which mulch to go with here’s what you need to know regarding layering it on the ground:

1. Clear any existing weeds from the area to be mulched

2. You can layer newspaper down across the area but leave room around existing flowers, bushes and trees. Leave areas where perennials are supposed to pop up open. The newspaper will help the mulch and its biodegradable so it will eventually disappear itself.

3. Spread mulch over the newspaper covering 2 – 4 inches thick. Less than 2 inches will let enough light through to the soil that any vegetation you are trying to prevent will reappear gloriously.

Hire a Qualified Landscaping Contractor and Get Your Home’s Exterior Looking Good

“Don’t be too proud.” We’ve heard that countless of times from our parents and all the old folks surrounding us when we were young. It sometimes pays if you don’t beam too much with pride, for humility certainly has its rewards. But it’s whole different thing when it comes to our homes.

Every homeowner is proud of his home. That’s why it sometimes seems to be a stab in the heart if you don’t hear praises from your visitors when you host some special occasion on your property. It may not be the way you treat your guests. It might be that your residence’s landscaping look dull.

Spicing up your landscaping is very essential. Guests will certainly heap praises on your house if you have stunning landscaping. What’s more, it’s definitely more relaxing to spend some of your extra time roaming around a serene and wonderfully landscaped yard.

You may be tempted to rehab your landscape because you’ve just watched some DIY home improvement program and the whole thing seems easy. Well, don’t fool yourself. They only show the easy stuff on TV. If you don’t have training in landscape designing, you should leave the job to the pros.

There are many landscaping contractors out there that are waiting for your call. But how do you find the perfect one? Landscape renovation is a costly venture and you’d want to make sure that your money will be spent properly. So it is really important that you don’t rush everything.

First, you may want to make sure that you’ll not end up with a fly-by-night scammer. There have been a lot of sorry stories of victims of landscape contractor scams and you’d definitely don’t like to be one of them. To fool-proof yourself from scammers, do some research.

Make sure that the office address posted in the contractor’s advertisement is valid. Part of scammer’s gimmick is to advertise phony location. Also, you should try to verify the contractor’s contact number. Usually a landline is more trustworthy than a cell phone number.

Call your prospective contractor and inquire for their state license number. You can call the state regulatory department to verify the validity of the license. If the contractor refuses or hesitates to provide his license number, then it’s a bad sign.

Most legitimate contractors these days have websites where you can check services they offer and their credentials. Websites also contain feedbacks from previous clients. You can contact previous customers to inquire about their experience. Another way to gauge a contractor’s level of service is to check out his BBB ratings. Good contractors generally do not have much negative ratings.

Make sure that the contractor is willing to provide a detailed plan of the project. Good contractors are really intent on satisfying their client’s needs and won’t hesitate to provide plans. Also, the landscaping contractor should offer to prepare a written contract of the project.
